Saint-Raphaël Var Handball

Founded in 1963, Saint-Raphaël Var Handball have played in the top tier of French handball since season 2007-08, having been promoted as second division champions at the end of the previous campaign. Between 2014 et 2019, the team has been coached by Joël Da Silva, following a successful spell with Toulouse. Saint-Raphaël appointed Rares Fortuneanu, former player and assistant, as new head coach.

Jean-François Krakowski, the club’s iconic president since 1987 and a familiar figure in the seaside resort, is greatly involved in the running of the club, having previously played for and coached the team, and having even had a spell as a referee.

After finishing the 2017-18 season at an impressive fourth place, Saint-Raphaël qualified once again for the EHF Cup, a tournament in which they earned runners-up medals in 2017 after losing to German outfit Füchse Berlin in the final.

On 2018-19 season, on matchday 3, Paris Saint-Germain Handball had won the first match at Coubertin 32-29, thanks to a stunning start and to the performance of Mikkel Hansen. The Red and Blue had been defeated in Saint-Raphaël 33 - 31 on matchday 23, thanks to a stunning performance from Raphaël Caucheteux with 14 goals.

This season, Nikola Karabatic's teammates have been receiving Saint-Raphaël at Coubertin on matchday 11. The Red and Blue have defeated them 39 - 26, with 12 goals from Mikkel Hansen. The return match will be held in April on matchday 22.

Saint-Raphaël are able to call upon the French League’s all-time top scorer, Raphaël Caucheteux, who attained that lofty status on 18 April 2018 by notching his 1,500th goal versus Saran Loiret. On 4 January 2018, aged 32, he finally made his international debut for France.

Adrien Dipanda
Right back

Having starred in the Montpellier side that won four successive French League titles between 2008 and 2011, Adrien Dipanda, nicknamed “Panda”, is one of the Lidl Starligue’s most prominent players, boasting vast continental and international experience. The towering right-back signed for Saint-Raphaël in 2012, following a loan stint with Spanish team Ademar Leon. He received his first France call-up in 2015, as a back-up to Paris Saint-Germain player Nedim Remili.

While representing Les Bleus, Dipanda earned a gold medal at the 2017 IHF World Championships, a silver at the Rio Olympic Games in 2016 and a bronze at the 2018 EHF European Championship. He has not lacked for individual accolades either: he was named best right-back in the league in 2015. During season 2017/2018, the Dijon native made 26 appearances, scoring 102 goals and providing 20 assists.

Palais des Sports JF Krakowski

Opened in 2005 with an exhibition match against a Chambéry Savoie Mont-Blanc team featuring the legendary Jackson Richardson, the Palais des Sports Jean-François-Krakowski is named after Saint-Raphaël’s driven chairman, Jean François Krakowski, who has run the club since 1987 and been a cornerstone of the success it has enjoyed over the past three decades. The arena’s current capacity is 2,000.

Located towards the north of Saint-Raphaël, the Palais des Sports Jean-François-Krakowski is easily accessible from the town centre, as well as from Saint-Raphaël Valescure train station. There are also a number of parking facilities near the arena.
