Montpellier Handball

Founded in 1982, Montpellier Handball are the most decorated club in the history of French handball, having won 14 French league titles, 13 Coupes de France, ten Coupes de la Ligue and two Champions League crowns. Giants on both the domestic and European scenes, Montpellier Handball have been in the top flight since 1992, when they lifted the division two title.

Les Montpellierains won their second Champions League title in 2017/18, beating HBC Nantes in the final. They finished runners-up to Paris Saint-Germain Handball in the Lidl Starligue that same season. Melvyn Richardson's teammates finished once again at the second position of the 2018-19 Lidl Starligue.

Paris SG - Montpellier Handball

Last year, the Red and Blue had defeated them 32 - 24 at Montpellier on Matchday 7 of the Lidl Starligue, thanks to Nedim Remili's good performance with 9 goals. The Parisians had defeated them again 33 - 26 at Coubertin on Matchday 21, with a great performance from Rodrigo Corrales and 15 stops.

This season, the Parisians have defeated them 35 - 30 at Coubertin on matchday 9, with a 100% shooting performance from Mikkel Hansen. The return match in Montpellier will be held in May on matchday 24.

Even for a club accustomed to success, the 2002/03 campaign proved to be a special one for Montpellier Handball, as they lifted the first division title, the Coupe de France and their maiden Champions League crown.

A Chambéry Savoie Mont-Blanc Handball youth product, Melvyn Richardson made his breakthrough under the orders of his father, Jackson Richardson, regarded by some as one of the greatest players in the history of the game. Since arriving at Montpellier in 2017, he has taken on an increasingly important role in the Bleus et Blancs line-up, confirming all his potential at the highest level.

Richardson won his first cap for France in a qualifier for the 2018 EHF EURO on 17 June 2017, having helped his country win the 2014 EHF U-18 European Championships and the 2015 IHF Youth World Championship, where he was voted MVP.

Palais des sports René Bougnol

Opened in 1977, the Palais des Sports René Bougnol is the iconic venue where Montpellier Handball have won most of their trophies. The Bougnol has a capacity of 2,900 and generates one of the finest atmospheres in French handball. Last year the club attracted the second-highest attendances in the Lidl Starligue after HBC Nantes.

The stadium is well served by public transport, namely Line 1 of the city’s tram network and Line 10 of its bus service. There are also a number of car parks situated nearby, making access easier for spectators coming from further afield.
