Galatasaray Spor Kulübü

Founded on October 1st, 1905, Galatasaray is competing within Sportoto Super Lig, Turkish first division.

The Galatasaray team is the most successful one in Turkey with 22 Championship titles to its credit. In addition to its national titles, the club is renowned for its numerous european sagas. Galatasaray have won the UEFA Cup in Copenhagen in 2000 by defeating Arsenal, as well as the UEFA Super Cup in the same season against Real Madrid, with two goals from Mario Jardel. The historic rivalry between the two Istanbul teams of Galatasaray and Fenerbahce makes this unique encounter a derby that unleashes passions in Turkey. This same rivalry also exists in basketball, with both clubs owning two of the best teams in the country.

The club is chaired by Mustafa Cengiz and coached by Fatih Terim, a former international player. During the 2018-19 season, the club finished first in the Turkish Super Lig, beyond Istanbul Başakşehi.

Previous encounters

Gathered in Group A of the Champions League, the two teams competed first time in Istanbul on October 1st. The Parisians won 1-0 thanks to a great strike between Sarabia and Icardi. Galatasaray squad will take revenge at Parc des Princes on December 11th.

Galatasaray achieved his best Champions League saga in 1989. After defeating Emmanuel Petit, Claude Puel and George Weah's AS Monaco in the quarter-finals, the Turkish lost to Steaua Bucharest in the semi-finals.
More recently in 2013, the club reached the quarter-finals after its success in the Round of 16 against Schalke 04. The step was then too high in the next stage against Real Madrid, despite a tight return match and a 3-2 defeat.

Player to watch

Sofiane Feghouli

Born on December 26th, 1989, in Levallois Perret, Sofiane Feghouli is a Franco-Algerian player who plays as midfielder. After having played for Red Star and Paris FC during his junior career, he finished his training at Grenoble Foot 38, with whom he signed a professional contract in 2007. After 3 seasons in Isère, he was transferred to Valence CF where he became an essential offensive player for the Valencian club. Transferred to Galatasaray on August 13th, 2017, he made the first hat trick of his career against Kasimpasa on February 17th, 2019.

With the Algerian national team, he achieved the greatest success of his career in 2019 and victory in the Africa Cup of Nations. In particular, he scored a decisive goal against Côte d'Ivoire in the semi-finals.

Since 2011, Galatasaray has been playing at the Türk Telekom Stadyumu, located in the Sariyer district of Istanbul. Its capacity is 52,000 places. The first player to score a goal in this stadium is turkish player Servet Çetin, under the colours of Galatasaray.
