Signal Iduna Park, formerly known as Westfalenstadion, is much more than just a sporting venue for Borussia Dortmund. It is the beating heart of the fans' unwavering passion and commitment to their team. Much of the stadium's renown rests on the Yellow Wall, a spectacular section of the stadium where supporters gather to form a vibrant yellow sea of shirts and banners.

The vibrant atmosphere created by Borussia Dortmund fans is unique in the world of soccer. The Yellow Wall, located in the south stand, creates a striking visual effect at every home match, symbolizing the unity of the fans and their unwavering devotion to the club.

In addition to its role as a fortress for Borussia Dortmund matches, the stadium is also a witness to historic moments in German soccer. It has hosted Bundesliga finals, UEFA Champions League matches and even FIFA World Cup matches in 1974. Every corner of Signal Iduna Park exudes the history of German and European soccer.

Equipped with modern facilities and fan amenities, Signal Iduna Park offers an immersive experience to fans who flock from far and wide to attend matches. The combination of the stadium's imposing architecture, rich history and passionate fan commitment makes it an iconic venue that transcends the sporting arena, becoming a living symbol of Borussia Dortmund's soccer culture.

The History of the Signal Iduna Park :

The project to build the stadium dates back to the 1960s, when the need for a replacement for the dilapidated Stadion Rote Erde became imperative due to the club's growing fan base. At the time, the city of Dortmund and the region were reluctant to commit to the considerable expense of a new stadium. In 1971, the city of Cologne, initially selected to host matches at the 1974 World Cup, withdrew from the race, and the funds earmarked for Cologne were reallocated to Dortmund, a city in the same region. Construction of the stadium began with a limited budget of 31.7 million German marks, allowing only a maximum capacity of 54,000 spectators.

Borussia Dortmund moved into its new stadium on April 2, 1974. Although relegated to the second division in 1972, they were the only team in the division to see their stadium host a 1974 World Cup match. It wasn't until 1976 that Borussia Dortmund played in the Bundesliga at their new stadium, marking the start of a new era for the club at Signal Iduna Park.

In the 1990s, the Westfalenstadion underwent a series of significant transformations. In 1992, the first major renovation reduced the stadium's capacity by eliminating many standing places, in line with new UEFA regulations. Three years later, Borussia Dortmund's league triumph prompted an extension of the stadium. The East and West stands were given an extra row of seats covered by a new roof, bringing capacity back to its original 54,000.

Following the team's Champions League triumph in the 1996-97 season, capacity was increased once again, with the South and North stands enlarged to 68,800. In anticipation of the 2006 World Cup, which includes a semi-final at the Westfalenstadion, a third extension was undertaken in 2000 to meet FIFA requirements.
