Football and the Olympic Games: citius, altius, fortius

Football made its first appearance at the Olympic Games in 1900, organised in Paris. Initially open to national teams and local clubs, it was England's Upton Park Football Club who won the first trophy.

In 1908, at the Olympic Games in London, England won the first Olympic tournament contested by national teams only. Amazingly, the podiums in 1908 and 1912 were exactly the same: England in gold, Denmark in silver and the Netherlands in bronze.

The French team won the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, beating Brazil in the final. Twice defending champions, the Seleção captured the hearts of the Rio de Janeiro crowd in 2016.

The women's tournament made its debut at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. With 4 trophies, including 3 in a row in 2004, 2008 and 2012, Team USA is the most successful team of Women football.
